About the fair
In 2006, the first Renewable Energy Fair was held at Chena Hot Springs Resort (Chena) to showcase the first Organic Rankine Cycle system in Alaska.
With the help of Department of Energy (DOE), Chena Hot Springs Resort was able to conduct numerous studies, map the area’s geothermal resources, and lay the foundation for getting online with geothermal power production. Today, Chena Hot Springs is home to two geothermal power plants that help facilitate a heating and electrical grid for this remote location.
Since technology advances quickly, Chena Hot Springs Resort has taken the opportunity to enhance the geothermal system and build up a one of a kind sustainable and remote community in Alaska. Check out the projects section for more information about the projects at Chena.
Chena Hot Springs presently employs 65+ full time employees year-round. Chena has become a “hot spot” for ecotourism boasting upwards of 90,000 visitors per year that wish to see and learn more about our renewable energy projects. Chena offers two free renewable energy tours daily. It is our goal to make Chena a completely self-sufficient and sustainable community. The tour includes fact sheets about our renewable energy projects, a tour of the geothermal power plant facility, and our greenhouses.
community impact
Chena hosts the annual Renewable Energy Fair every August. The fair’s goal is to spread awareness of renewable energy technologies and sustainability opportunities.
The Fair attracts experts from all disciplines of energy production to come and share their knowledge with the local community. The Fair is attended by the Alaska State delegation each year as well local and federal dignitaries.
Each year vendors and speakers showcase their impact on communities through energy and discuss projects past and current around the world.
